ELKHART – You've probably noticed one of the problems created by the weather this week – potholes.
Street crews in Elkhart have also noticed.
The weather is beginning to play havoc on the road surfaces.
First, it’s cold. Then, it warms up. Then, water seeps into small cracks and freezes, creating the potholes.
Without the excess water, street crews can seal the cracks, but when it’s this wet, crack sealing won't hold.
“It’s a temporary fix,” said Marty Morgan of the Elkhart Street Department. “You can’t get hot asphalt right now. It’s cold patch, so we’ll end up in the spring fixing it permanently. It’s really hard to patch anything even temporary when it’s this wet.”
You can call your local street department if you notice a pothole developing and give them information on where it is.
