ST. JOSEPH — Police have released the name of a man who drowned after jumping off the south pier at Silver Beach on Tuesday.

St. Joseph police said they were summoned to the pier about noon by witnesses who reported observing the man, now identified as 26-year-old Alexander Hines of Benton Harbor, leap into Lake Michigan. He resurfaced once to yell for help before disappearing beneath the waves.

A dive team from the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department recovered his body in about seven feet of water. He was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
