SOUTH BEND — Firefighters doused a house fire Wednesday evening that
left one room with smoke and water damage and the 88-year-old owner,
Ray Hullinger, with a little singed hair.

Hullinger said he was outside on his patio in the 24000 block of
Edison Road when he heard the fire alarm go off after 6 p.m. Smoke was
coming out, and he saw flames in the living room, he said. So, he came
outside.

Several neighbors called 911 after seeing flames in the one-story
brick house, said Chief Terry Korpal of the Southwest Central Fire
Territory. Clay Fire Territory also responded.

Hullinger said he wasn’t sure what caused the fire.
