Crews kept a small fire from becoming a big problem for a man whose house was hit by lightning Sunday morning in Elkhart County’s Cleveland Township.
This happened in the 51000 block of County Road 3 around 11 a.m. A WSBT reporter at the scene said the homeowner was inside when he heard a loud clap of thunder, smelled smoke and called 911.
Because of the size of the house, Cleveland Township Fire called for help from other departments just to be safe.
Crews found the lightning had hit the man’s chimney. After cutting a small hole in the roof, they found evidence of a fire and extinguished it. The home received smoke damage and water damage from the firefighters’ hoses.
