LAPORTE — Sonar devices failed to find a body after a search resumed today for a possible drowning victim on Fishtrap Lake in LaPorte.
About 8 p.m. Wednesday, officers, responding to a call, discovered a partially submerged boat about 50 yards from shore in about 10 feet of water.
Indiana Department of Natural Resources conservation officer Shawn Brown said that among the findings were cigarette packs and a hat, along with fishing tackle and a cooler floating in the water.
A stringer of fresh fish was found in the boat.
Divers from the DNR and the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office entered the water, and the search was called off about 2 a.m. today.
Brown said the next step might be to just wait and see if a body floats to the surface, or information develops to shed light on what happened.
LaPorte County Sheriff Mike Mollenhauer asked anyone with information to contact the sheriff’s office or any local law enforcement agency.
“We need some help and we would appreciate a call on it,’’ Mollenhauer said.
