A blinding thunderstorm apparently caused a North Webster woman to drive into Backwaters Lake. She was able to roll down a window, crawl out and swim to shore. (June 29, 2012) |
Strong wind, rain and hail apparently caused a woman to lose sight of where she was driving Friday afternoon. Suddenly she realized her car was sinking in Backwaters Lake near North Webster.
Mary Neibert, 58, of North Webster, was able to roll down a vehicle window, crawl out and swim to shore, Indiana Conservation Officer Ashlee Jackson stated, via a news release.
Witnesses said Neibert drove off Backwater Road, onto the public access boat ramp parking lot and drove around the lot into the lake. Jackson said there was low visibility at the time of the mishap because of the thunderstorm.
An Indiana Conservation Officer diver hooked Neibert’s vehicle onto a wrecker so it could be pulled out.
