Fire broke out in a pole barn at a family farm in the 3000 block of Portage Road around noon Tuesday. Firefighters were able to rescue two horses from the barn, but a dog was not able to be saved.
Bertrand Township Assistant Fire Chief Jim Pastryk told WSBT firefighters from four departments battled the fire and were able to get it under control quickly, though the hay-filled barn was a total loss.
Firefighters from Clay Fire Territory, Niles City, Niles Township, Buchanan Township and Buchanan City were at the scene. No firefighters were injured.
