A fire that seriously damaged a Clay Township home and injured two people Thursday was likely caused by some type of electrical failure within the power strip, fire officials said.

Firefighters were called to the home at 18076 Heatherfield Drive in the Arlington Heights subdivision northeast of South Bend about 6 p.m. and found a man coming out of the home on his own power.

A fire crew went inside and was able to rescue the man's wife in a back bedroom. Two dogs were also able to escape.

The man was taken to an area hospital for observation and later released, officials said.

The woman’s injuries were much more serious, said Clay Fire Territory Battalion Chief Dave Cherrone, who added her problems were respiratory related. She was listed in critical condition Thursday night.

Cherrone said he is still awaiting a damage estimate, but said the entire inside of the home will have to be stripped. There was no structural damage.

Cherrone was not able to provide a name or condition of the female victim today.
