ELKHART – Elkhart is getting a new assistant police chief.
Mayor Dick Moore on Tuesday announced Lieutenant Laura Koch will be the second in command at the Elkhart Police Department.
Koch was sworn in during a ceremony in the City Council chambers.
She has been with the department for 11 years and most recently has served as public information officer.
“I’m always up for a challenge, and I think that this is definitely going to be a challenge, and I am going to face a lot of obstacles,” Koch said. “I look forward to working with all the guys and making the Police Department even better than it is.”
Koch replaces current Assistant Police Chief Tim Balyeat who is retiring on Thursday.
Balyeat was with the department for 26 years.
