SOUTH BEND -- Julie Curtis is looking forward to receiving applications.

And that's because the new grant being offered by Downtown South Bend
Inc. not only encourages creativity, the grant requires it, said
Curtis, director of marketing for the organization.

It's called the Special Event: Creative Capital Enhancement Grant.
DTSB plans to award and distribute $5,000 for events that are
scheduled through the end of calendar year 2012.

Companies and organizations that host special events in downtown South
Bend can apply for and receive up to $1,000.

The money must be used for a physical item or items that will
positively impact the special event, and ultimately draw more
attention to the downtown area.

"We're encouraging creativity. This is going to be fun, and we're
excited to see what applications come in," Curtis said. "Anytime you
can offer assistance is a good time, especially during these economic
times."

Maybe an organization applies for money to buy flagpole banners. Or
costumes. Or a custom tent, she said.

Maybe a company requires something unique that will enhance an ongoing
