SOUTH BEND -- Police are still investigating what caused an Elkhart man to die after he was the passenger in a minor accident over the weekend.
Police said 37-year-old Maximino Colon was found dead in the back of an SUV after the driver of the vehicle crashed about 7 a.m. Saturday in the 5200 block of Miami Street.
The driver told investigators he hit a curb and lost control while trying to avoid a car that came into his lane, causing him to smash into a mailbox and flagpole.
"In no way was this high speed enough to cause a fatal," said Capt. Phil Trent, South Bend police spokesman.
Trent said officials are still awaiting the results of an autopsy to determine how Colon may have tied. Police are also waiting for toxicology reports for both the driver and passenger of the vehicle.
Trent said the driver was arrested, but did not know for what charges.
The group had reportedly been out late drinking, police said.
"It could be a combination of things," Trent said of a cause of death. "We don't think it was trauma."
Police also will look to see if Colon had any medical problems.
His death is not considered suspicious in nature.
The St. Joseph County Fatal Accident Crash Team is investigating.
