Violate Elkhart County's fireworks ban and you will be arrested. That's what two men in Goshen learned the hard way Wednesday afternoon.

About 4:15 p.m., Goshen Police were called to the 1200 block of Westwood Drive about a grass fire moving through yards and toward Elkhart Road. Four yards were damaged or destroyed, police told WSBT, via a news release.

Police talked with people attending an Independence Day outing and learned two men were shooting off fireworks, which sparked the grass fires.

Arrested were 25-year-old Jay Zheng of Goshen and 29-year-old Joe Dorbin, of Granger, for violation of an emergency order, a Class B misdemeanor.

Thankfully, no one was injured and no homes were damaged.

Elkhart County Commissioners issued a “Disaster Emergency Proclamation” which bans fireworks throughout the county because of drought conditions.

Zheng and Dorbin have court dates set for July 9.
