In 2014, Purdue will install an interactive sculpture depicting the solar system in honor of Janice Voss. She spent almost 50 days total in space and traveled nearly 19 million miles in her five spaceflights.
The Purdue alumna and South Bend native died in February at age 55 from complications of cancer.
When completed, the full-size sculpture will span the length of a football field and include a model of the sun with a diameter of as much as 30 feet surrounded by the planets, including a 6-inch-wide Earth.
Each planet will be lighted and suspended from curved walls at a new mall at Purdue's Discovery Park. The Associated Press contributed to this report
