A 12-year-old girl airlifted to Memorial Hospital after hit by a pickup Wednesday afternoon has passed away.

This happened just before 5 p.m. in the 29000 block of County Road 108 in Elkhart County.

Police say 56-year-old Norman Yeaky of Edwardsburg, Michigan was driving westbound when he struck 12-year-old Dajeianna Smith with the front passenger side of his truck.

Yeaky said he did not see Smith, who was also walking westbound. He told police he hit something and then people started shouting. He stopped and realized he had struck the girl.

Smith had trauma to her head and chest. On Thursday she died in the hospital.

Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be factors in this accident. Police say no enforcement action was taken against Yeaky.

The investigation is ongoing
