Highlights
Fort Monroe in Hampton, Virginia, started as a defense for Jamestown in 1609 under the name Fort Algernourne. Later, the fort became a strategic post for the Union during the Civil War. During that war, Fort Monroe became refuge to as many as 10,000 escaped slaves seeking protection in the Union-controlled site. Today, Monroe is home to the Army's Training and Doctrine Command, or TRADOC, but is scheduled to close in 2011 as part of the military's Base Realignment and Closure plan. Since that announcement was made two years ago, there has been debate about whether it should be handed over for private development or turned into a national park. Show more »

A close look at Hampton's contraband slave village
Among the very best views of the sprawling fugitive slave village that rose up in the ruins of Hampton during the Civil War is a December 1864 photograph taken by famed photographer Timothy O'Sullivan. Probably shot from the roof or cupola of the city's...

Like most blacks in the pre-Civil War South, the African-Americans of this old colonial town had few choices when it came to worship. Enslaved or free, illiterate or learned, they crowded shoulder to shoulder in the rear balconies of the white...

First call of "Taps"
It’s just 24 notes sounded on a bugle — and it lasts only 50 to 60 seconds all told. Yet no piece of music is more widely known in America than the strains of “Taps” — or more deeply felt. When the plaintive call was...
