  3. Waleska Martinez, 37

Born in Puerto Rico, Waleska Martinez Rivera, 37, of Jersey City, New Jersey, was the “backbone of the family,” according to her father. With a business and computer science degree from the University of Puerto Rico, Martinez came to the States in 1987 to advance her career, but maintained close ties to her family.   In thirteen years with the U.S. Census Bureau she rose from Clerk to Automation Specialist for the New York Region.   On September 11, Martinez was traveling with co-worker Marion Britton to attend a conference in San Francisco. Martinez loved to cook Italian and Spanish foods for friends and family, played tennis and softball, and enjoyed concerts and dancing.   She is survived by her parents, a brother, and a sister.

Any time you prepay for any travel service, you have money at risk, and you want to make sure that if a future hurricane threatens your travel plans, you make the best decisions for yourself. Although travel suppliers generally allow you to adjust to a hurricane, they typically limit your alternatives within a tight time frame. If you decide you want to delay your trip for a longer period, switch to a different destination, or even not go at all, you could be on the hook for some big fees and penalties.
