3. Designer Greg Chait: Ready for his close-up?

When Greg Chait won the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award in New York City last month, the man behind the Elder Statesman line of ultra-luxury cashmere knits — think $5,525 blankets, $1,890 belted cardigan sweaters and $380 ski caps — was practically unknown outside the fashion industry. And he was only slightly better known within it.

  5. Revolutionize retail

Design mavens across the country had cause for regret in February when Murray Moss closed the doors of his namesake store in SoHo (though a highly edited website, mossonline.com, still lives on). Now where to go and see the latest and greatest in innovative, unpredictable, progressive design?

  7. John Updike, art critic

Shortly before he died, John Updike paid tribute to that great painter of portraits, John Singer Sargent. “We're drawn to artists who tell us that art is difficult to do, and takes a spiritual effort, because we are still puritan enough to respect a strenuous spiritual effort,” Updike said in a 2008 interview. “We don't really want to think that the artist is only very skilled, that he has merely devoted his life to perfecting a certain set of intelligible skills. Sargent misses getting top marks because he made it look easy.”

  9. The year's most noteworthy lists are getting less worthy

It’s New Year’s Day, and that snowball-like pelting sound you hear around your head is the noise generated from an estimated 2.2 million “year in review” compilations that the media bombard us with at this time of year so they can put it on autopilot over the holidays, instead of having to enterprise any original content.

Not all murder is deadly. Oh wait. Yes it is, scratch that. Square One Theatre Company's opens its 23rd season with a thriller called Deadly Murder, at any rate. The plot goes something like this: A successful, smart woman in Manhattan seduces a young waiter and takes him back to her SoHo apartment. And it doesn't go so well from there. A gun gets involved. Suspense ensues.
