  3. An instant home farm: Just add water

MinifarmBox, a new venture spearheaded by Mount Washington writer Conor Fitzpatrick, takes some of the guess work out of vegetable gardening for novices. Fitzpatrick will deliver and install a 4-by-4-foot raised bed made of sustainably farmed cedar or redwood. Each raised bed includes organic soil, a moisture gauge for proper watering, a gopher screen if needed, a beginner's manual and three varieties of heirloom seeds. Cost: $289. Other sizes are available, as is a drip irrigation system. The best part: All you need is a flat area that gets six to eight hours of sun a day. 7. A good French restaurant, heavy on the crepes

When people ask me to recommend a French restaurant in the area, I never think of Crepe du Jour. I didn't realize until I ate there recently how much the Mount Washington creperie, which started as a cart in the Village Square at Cross Keys, had turned into a serious restaurant. OK, not serious, but a French restaurant with good food, not just a place dishing out crepes.

  9. Dorothy Gaspar's glove designs pack star power

Dorothy Gaspar does not make gloves for meek women. Her long, sinuous leather creations -- imagine Louboutin stilettos for your hands -- are better suited for martini-swilling minxes who smirk through apologies. Same goes for the chic two-tone driving gloves that come in flashy sports-car colors and snap efficiently at the wrist. Even folded over in repose, like sleeping swans, Gaspar's gloves are ready for their close-up.
