  1. The end of steelmaking but not of Sparrows Point

The great steel mill of Sparrows Point is gone, and it's never coming back. Local, state and federal officials, along with union leaders, made a valiant attempt to find a new operator who would restart production there, but it was not to be. The plant's 12-year-old cold mill is being sold to a company that will disassemble it and use it for spare parts, and the rest of the complex will be razed to the ground. An institution that provided not just employment but an identity to a community, a factory that represented America's industrial and military might, is now just another relic of history.

  3. Formstone would be banned on new buildings under proposal

Frankly fake but authentically Baltimore, the Formstone that swaths many a rowhouse may seem low-brow or even tacky to some.

  7. More wintry weather in forecast amid another bout of slush

Winter waited until the busy holiday season to arrive, and it isn't letting up yet. After a second bout of icy precipitation Wednesday, more snow, sleet or freezing rain is possible over the weekend.

  13. Wonderful holiday tradition at Highlandtown firehouse

When I heard that Highlandtown had rolled out another holiday train garden, I hailed a cab and told the driver to take me to the Conkling Street firehouse. What I found was the authentic thing.

  15. Uncle Harry's Italian Christmas

Using their keen eyesight, octopi stare at the world from two beady eyes. They maneuver through the sea with four pairs of bilaterally symmetrical arms that bear suction cups. They possess a hard beak — similar to that of a parrot, the only hard part about them — and as cephalopods, they squeeze into and out of tight places, helpful when fleeing moray eels and other predatory fish. Three hearts pump and heat blood that circulates through an octopus' system, and they have demonstrated both short- and long-term memory and problem-solving skills in mazes and in other experiments administered by biologists.
