  3. Ret. Brig. Gen. Robert L. Fritz, of Somerset

    Ret. Brig. Gen. Robert L. Fritz, of Somerset died July 17, 2011, at Prairieview Lutheran Home, Danforth, Ill. Born March 30, 1923, in Somerset. Preceded in death by his wife of 68 years Norma nee Walker. He is survived by his son, Robert A. (Lois) Park, Forest, Ill.; grandson Donald (Amie) Mokena, Ill.; granddaughter Claudia, Glendale, Wis., and two great-grandchildren. General Fritz retired in 1978 after 36 years of active federal service. General Fritz’s military career was characterized by many outstanding accomplishments while serving in varied positions of key responsibility. Serving as Director of Logistics, General Fritz was the principal advisor to The Adjutant General of Pennsylvania on all matters pertaining to supply, maintenance, movements, data processing services and logistical activities for the entire Pennsylvania Army National Guard. During his military career, General Fritz has been awarded 19 military decorations, and service medals to include: the U.S. Army Legion of Merit, U.S. Army Meritorious Service Medal, U.S. Army Commendation Medal, and the Pennsylvania Distinguished Service Medal. He was a graduate of many senior service schools, including the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. For over 20 years General Fritz served in positions of great responsibility in the U.S. Army Air Defense Command and the Army component of the North American Defense Command (NORAD). He commanded the 2nd Battalion, 176th Air Defense Artillery Battalion, a nuclear capable missile battalion deployed in defense of the Greater Pittsburgh area. General Fritz transferred to Ft. Indiantown Gap for two years as Director of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard Training Equipment Site. During this period he also served as Director of Safety, chairman of the Energy Conservation Task Force and as the military member of the Governor’s Railway Advisory Council. General Fritz is a 65 year member of The American Legion, past Commander of Dundalk Post 38 and member of Berlin Post 045.  He also was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 15040, Last Man’s Club of Berlin, Sipesville Lions Club, Somerset Masonic Lodge 0358, Syria Shriner Cheswick, Pa., Trinity Lutheran Church and Emeritus Member of the Historical and Genealogical Society of Somerset. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. at Hauger Zeigler Funeral Home, Somerset, where funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Interment Somerset Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Somerset Historical Society or Trinity Lutheran Church.
