  1. Muti's Bach Mass with CSO full of awe but could stand more vigor

Orchestra Hall is likely to be heavily populated for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra concerts of the next several nights, not only because they bring the return of Riccardo Muti after a six-month absence, but the music director's first Chicago performances of J.S. Bach's Mass in B minor, a masterpiece new to his local repertory.

  3. Now an honored guest rather than sub, Sakari Oramo returns to CSO podium

Sakari Oramo is another guest conductor originally brought in as a substitute for Chicago Symphony Orchestra subscription concerts imperiled by accidents or illnesses suffered by Riccardo Muti. The Finnish maestro made so positive an impression at his hastily arranged debut here in February 2011 that management would have been remiss in not inviting him back through the front door. And that was precisely what happened Thursday night at Symphony Center.

Andreas Mitisek is only half-kidding when he says he's lost count as to exactly how many hats he will be sporting for the production of "Maria de Buenos Aires" his Chicago Opera Theater will open Saturday night at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance.

  7. Taking the less-known route

If you can't get in — or can't afford — a top business school, is an MBA from a lesser-known school worth it?
If you can't get in — or can't afford — a top business school, is an MBA from a lesser-known school worth it? The answer depends largely on the student. Those gunning for the top of the organizational chart, and without the networking...

  13. Symphony Center jazz season: Herbie Hancock, Wynton Marsalis and Mavis Staples

In 1994, Orchestra Hall — home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra — took a gamble. The grand old institution for the first time launched a jazz subscription series, betting that Chicagoans would commit to a season of such events, albeit a short one (four concerts).

"Do you remember when it was 80 degrees in March last year?"
    For RedEye
"Do you remember when it was 80 degrees in March last year?" Yup, that might be the most common complaint muttered by coat-clad Chicagoans this spring. Sure, summer didn't come early this year as it did last, but that hasn't stopped dozens of...

  17. Bottle blues: Why does the wine taste worse at home?

Q: When I've purchased wine lately at either a grocery store, or even a wine shop for that matter, it seems as though some of the wines have a sour taste to them. We can have wine in a restaurant and then purchase the same wine in a store and it doesn't taste the same. I know I'm purchasing the same wine because I'll write down the one we liked and look for it in the store. It's happened not only with moderately priced wines, but more expensive bottles as well. Is this because the wine is not shipped or stored correctly? It's so frustrating, especially if I've spent a good amount on the bottle.
