  3. Fighting emerald ash borer

Q: We have a beautiful, full ash tree on the berm in back of our house, which at this point is free from the emerald ash borer. Last summer it was fully leafed out, and we have checked the bark for tell-tale signs of the borer such as small D-shaped holes. The tree is about 12 inches in diameter. I would like to do everything possible to keep this tree healthy and would like to drench the soil with Bayer Advanced Tree & Shrub Insect Control containing imidacloprid. Because the application is to be placed around the base of the tree, how far out from the base can I go? The tree is directly on the top of the berm, with a downward slope to the front and back of the tree. After removing the mulch, should I dig down an inch or so to help prevent runoff? Can the drench be done on subsequent days if the soil is too wet to fully absorb it in a single day? When should I treat the tree?

  5. CSO series explores connections between nature and culture

For ages, mankind has been fascinated by rivers, not simply as natural resources and avenues of commercial conveyance, but also as symbols, metaphors and ideas. Countless artists, composers, writers and thinkers have pondered the significance of these wondrous bodies of water and how they impact on culture, society, geopolitics and, closer to our own time, the very future of our planet.

  7. Restrict drawbridge times

It is kind-of spring already and a sure sign of it is the clanging bells from our drawbridges in the downtown river area. While it looks magnificent to watch them go up and down, it seems it is only happening at the height of noon hour traffic.  I am...

  11. Dibs on a french fry food truck

A calamari taco with cilantro-lime relish would never replace a Chicago-style hot dog.
A calamari taco with cilantro-lime relish would never replace a Chicago-style hot dog. We wouldn't dream of swapping a drippy Italian beef for a gruyere grilled cheese. We'll always crave deep dish pizza. But Chicago continues to miss out on the...

  15. TV pitches: So I've got this idea for a show ...

Two weeks from now, TV networks will announce their new slate of shows for next season. The majority of these series will be variations on a formula. Procedurals. High-concept sci-fi and fantasy dramas. Nighttime soaps. Comedies starring familiar faces. This is how it works. Out-of-the-ordinary shows tend to be too risky when the goal is big ratings.

  19. Daley settles (not entirely) into life as a regular Chicagoan

    He still gets up early.
He still gets up early. He could sleep in. He no longer has a big staff to deploy. No public crises nipping at his mind and time. He lives alone. He gets up at 6 anyway, and sets off to the gym before breakfast. He likes it there, feels safe in the...

  23. CSO presents mixed bag of French, Spanish fare

After devoting the three weeks of Riccardo Muti's spring residency mainly to core Austro-German repertory, the musicians of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra probably were in need of a change of pace. And so, for that matter, were audience members.
