  1. UConn Salary Bloat Wins National Notice

    The Hartford Courant
University of Connecticut President Susan Herbst thinks she and her college are not famous enough, and last week she did something about it. She hired Tysen Kendig as the university's new publicity mogul for $227,500. But before Tysen Kendig —...

  3. Finally, A Day To Celebrate Hockey In Hartford

    The Hartford Courant
It was 1989 and Todd Krygier, a little-known NHL newcomer, was sitting among a handful of Canadian teammates on the Whalers team bus. They wanted to know where he was from, so the American kid told them. "UConn," Krygier said. They thought he meant...

  5. SNL's Kenan Thompson Brings His Stand-Up Act to the Jorgensen in Storrs

It's taken Kenan Thompson (pictured) seven years to become a breakout performer on Saturday Night Live. But over the years, few cast members have been as consistently funny, their recurring characters as memorable, or their short time in the spotlight so well used as Thompson. He's the buoyant host of What's Up With That? who can't stop busting out his theme song (much to the chagrin of perpetual guest Lindsey Buckingham). He's the inmate brought in to scare juvenile offenders. He's Rev. Al Sharpton. Grady Wilson. Bill Cosby. The list goes on and on. The babyfaced Thompson has starred in a number of non-SNL shows and movies over the years — "All That," "Kenan and Kel," "Good Burger," "Snakes on a Plane" — and next he'll be seen in the comedy "Wieners." Thompson brings his stand-up to Storrs on Tuesday.

  15. Ice Cream for the Emperor! Wallace Stevens Turns 133 at the Hartford Public Library

<span style=&quot;font-size: small;">Ever since his 125th birthday in 2004, the great modernist poet Wallace Stevens has been looking forever young. Prior to that, the author of seminal poems like &ldquo; The Emperor of Ice Cream&rdquo; and &ldquo;Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird&rdquo; may as well have been put out to pasture, at least in his hometown of Hartford.</span>

  17. Looking For Tech In All The Right Places

We've listened to endless blather during this campaign season about how tax cuts will create jobs. I think Bruce Carlson has a better idea. He's finding potentially viable products developed by private industries in the state that for some reason have not...

  19. New Exhibit at UConn's William Benton Museum of Art Will Make You Rethink the Middle East

Imagine yourself surrounded by eight individuals, all jabbering away at once at something or other. You'd hear bits of sentences, word fragments, syllables, spaces and breaths. Few long, well thought-out utterances would survive. Differences between the speakers' texts &mdash; and perhaps the speakers themselves &mdash; would fall away. The counterpoint would be almost musical. That's the feeling you'll get visiting Shimon Attie's <em>MetroPAL.IS.</em>, an eight-screen HD video installation on display at UConn's Benton Museum until Dec. 16. Attie scripted a hybrid speech, adapting segments of the Israeli Declaration of Independence from 1948 with the Palestinian Declaration of Independence from 1988. He then filmed 24 individuals from both communities reading passages of the script. The effect is a softening of the hard edges between Palestinian and Israeli identities in favor of their new, shared boundaries as New Yorkers. Whether or not you agree with the premise doesn't matter; we could all use new ways of thinking about the crisis in the Middle East. And that's what great art is capable of.

  21. Ron White's Moral Compass Tour Comes to Storrs on Oct. 26

Some comedians never make the transition to movie acting, nor do they need to. Between highly rated <em>Comedy Central </em>specials, CD, DVD and book sales and sold-out shows, Ron &quot;Tater Salad" White has remained one of the most successful comedians on the planet for more than a decade. He's brushed shoulders with big-screen success over the years; the 2003 theatrical release of <em>Blue Collar Comedy Tour: The Movie</em> documented his road-dog, cigar-chomping days with fellow Southerners Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall and Larry the Cable Guy. He's also appeared in the feature films <em>Horrible Bosses </em>and <em>Sex and the City 2</em>, and more recently, the Texas comedian was a featured player in Billy Bob Thornton's 1960s period drama <em>Jayne Mansfield's Car</em>. Still, Tater Salad's best doing stand-up, telling stories while he sips scotch, reminding us again and again how cool and enviable it is to be really, truly funny. Catch his stand-up at UConn's Jorgensen Center on Oct. 26, or be on the lookout for the upcoming television movie <em>Ron White's Comedy Salute to the Troops 2012</em>.

  23. UConn Again Has to Pay a Fine For Its Treatment of Research Animals

The University of Connecticut has what you might call a really ugly history when it comes to animal cruelty in research studies. In 2002, the university paid $129,500 to the U.S. Department of Agriculture for repeated animal welfare violations on its...
