9. Greater New Haven Restaurants Raise Money For AIDS Research With "Dining Out for Life"

We all enjoy a meal out on the town, supporting local business and experiencing our communities. On April 25, you can visit one of 30 restaurants across the state and have a portion of your check donated to help support those with HIV/AIDS and other chronic ailments. It's the annual Dining Out for Life, a national day of dining and donating to benefit AIDS research and support. By visiting a participating restaurant, your donated funds will help AIDS Project New Haven continue its mission of providing services and support to our neighbors whose lives have been affected by the disease. At least 25% of food and beverage sales will be donated, and 160 York Street Cafe will be donating 100% of their food and beverage take for the night. Diners can choose to make and additional donation, and will be entered into a drawing to win a big prize, valued at $1,500. See diningoutforlife.com/newhaven for a full list of participating restaurants, how much they're donating, and which meals during the day are valid.

  11. Crime & Punishment: Drunk Woman Discharges Can of Bear Repellant in Hotel

Last year, Operation Bloodline, a joint effort between local cops and federal agents, led to the arrests of 105 people allegedly involved in the crack-selling operation of New Haven street gangs. The sting has been credited with reducing the area's murder rate. However, state's attorneys have hit a snag in their prosecution of two suspects because Hamden Police Officer Dedric Jones did not disclose, when he applied for a warrant to wiretap their phones, that they had both, at some point, dated his sister. Suspected gang member Zarkee Sanders is pressing for evidence from the wiretaps to be dismissed because Jones "was not impartial" in his investigation and was searching for ways to "discourage" Sanders' relationship with the woman. The voice of the sister appears in some of the recordings and she allegedly rented cars that were used for gang business. Officer Jones is claiming her involvement was a surprise to him, reports the New Haven Independent news website.
