9. Crime and Punishment: Former Governor John Rowland being paid as a 'consultant' for physical rehabilitation company

John Rowland is not a physical therapist. Yet the disgraced former governor is paid as a "consultant" by Apple Rehab, a physical rehabilitation company that happens to be owned by the husband of Lisa Wilson-Foley, the businesswoman who happens to be running for Congress in Connecticut's Fifth District. The Register-Citizen of Litchfield County also reports that Rowland approached another candidate in the GOP primary, real estate developer Mark Greenberg, and suggested he be paid to "consult" him through an animal shelter he oversees with his wife. (Greenberg declined the offer.) "Consultant" is a term often used for former office holders who peddle their influence among party officials and financiers (and it is perfectly legal). The three other, less wealthy Republicans in the primary say Rowland did not approach them. One of them, former FBI agent Mike Clark, was probably avoided because he, incidentally, led the taskforce that uncovered the corruption scandal that ousted Rowland from office and sent him to prison for 10 months.

  19. Crime & Punishment: Plainville man arrested for punching a dog

-Ansonia Police Officer John Troesser responded to reports that a roaming pit bull bit a man. He says such a dog "came charging toward [him] and was barking aggressively" and, lacking any more calm or creative solutions, shot it. One problem: It was the wrong dog. The offending pit bull was back in its owners' home by the time Troesser arrived. The slain dog (which was later euthanized) was Ice, a one-year-old rescued pit bull that resident Rachel Trapp was raising to be a therapy dog, according to the Valley Independent Sentinel news website. Trapp claims that, like in many cases of police overzealousness, race was an issue. "He was killed because of his breed and we are fed up with this injustice for the whole Pit Bull Breed!" she wrote on a "Justice for Ice" Facebook page. The police chief says Troesser acted appropriately, but Trapp (in whose yard the incident took place) says she has surveillance video showing Ice "was standing still and wagging his tail the entire time."

  23. Squid ink on your plate, in your palate

Fearless eaters are in vogue. A slew of reality television shows and food blogs, ranging from the Travel Channel's"No Reservations" toYouTube's Epic Meal Time, encourage diners to eat first, ask later (if at all) — whether the food at hand is snake hearts or tripe or a gingerbread house made with steak bricks and Cheez Whiz mortar. Who needs to know what goes in that food? Taste those flavors, taste them again, and don't forget to clean your plate. Never mind the haters.
