  1. Post-9/11 American Flags Inspire Photographer Robert Carley

Immediately after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, people throughout the country started showing their patriotism more overtly than ever. The most common tribute was flying American flags, but some people went beyond that, painting flags on virtually any surface.

  5. Beachland: Elmwood's New Hometown Eatery

You don't get much more hometown than the Beachland Tavern. For one thing, the new West Hartford restaurant takes its name from the park on South Quaker Lane, where owner Chip Kohn and executive chef Tim Marotto played Little League baseball as boys.

  7. Daytrippers: Sheffield Island Lighthouse

The Sheffield Island Lighthouse has stood steadfast for more than 140 years, a symbol of Connecticut's rich maritime history.  Built in 1868, this structure is nearly identical to other nearby lighthouses in Greenwich and Noank.  "It's one of six lighthouses that has the same architectural and engineering foundation to it," says Lighthouse Keeper, Greg Goomrigian who spends days and nights on the island in the summertime.  "This is my office.  When I wake up in the morning, I get a sunrise," smiles Goomrigian.  "And when I go to sleep at night, I get a sunset.  You can't beat it!"

  9. Dining Down on the Shore

Here on the high-rent Gold Coast, where McMansions and yachts line the Long Island Sound, you'd think there would be plenty of waterfront dining choices to cater to the castle kings and captains, not to mention the rest of us who work for them. You'd think wrong. Perhaps it's the aforementioned bigwigs who block any potential waterside restaurants, fearing the plebes might infest their personal playgrounds and ruin their view. Or maybe it's just a case of bureaucracy 101: zoning, insurance, permits and enough red tape to tangle up a would-be waterside restaurateur for years. Regardless, inexplicably, there are relatively few places on our section of coastline at which to enjoy the lapping of saltwater ripples or a glorious waterfront sunset over a frosty libation and a dozen oysters. Just a handful of restaurants can claim a waterfront locale in Fairfield County.
