3. Where to find freshly made aguas frescas

<h2 style="infobox">A mix and mash of agua fresca outlets to quench your thirst
Finding freshly made aguas frescas isn't as easy as it used to be -- many restaurants now use commercial powders and mixes. Many too are overly sugary. Look for aguas in pitchers or traditional vitroleros rather than in circulating machines. Here are some of our favorite sources:

  5. Spreading the word, through pamphlets

I had an epiphany the first time I visited the Free Tract Society, in a large storefront on York Boulevard in Los Angeles' Highland Park. Two 20-foot-long tables were weighed down with neatly stacked piles of fliers blaring lurid headlines that dealt with some of my favorite subjects: witchcraft, easy money, homosexuality and communism. Behind a worn Formica counter, an offset press churned out additional tracts almost continuously -- modest, mostly two-color, pamphlets and one-sheets. A quiet man in khaki work clothing welcomed me to take anything I might find appealing. It seemed I'd stumbled into some underground, punk rock, DIY distro fantasy. I was ready to sign up and join whatever revolution was getting underway. Then I looked up and saw the paintings of Jesus.

    <h2 style="infobox">Baked in L.A., inspired by N.Y.

Baked in L.A., inspired by N.Y. Here are some of our favorite New York-style pizza places in the Los Angeles area. Regular, whole-pie cheese pizzas were taste-tested -- no Sicilian, no deep-dish (if offered), no goat cheese. Pizzerias that serve only...

  13. Striking it rich

UNLESS you're hanging out with conspicuously consuming celebutantes, you may have noticed a new mood in the air these days. It seems as if more and more Angelenos are talking about enjoying life without ruining it for the next generation, and when it comes to food and wine, they're focusing on real quality instead of being distracted by glitzy hype.

  15. Civic activists in L.A. have growing appetite to curb medical marijuana clinics

The little clinic rests along a graceful curve of Eagle Rock Boulevard also occupied by a karate studio, a barber and a smattering of modest houses, one with a basketball hoop. The building, marked only by a metal placard that says "Cornerstone," is unremarkable, by design.
