3. Unibroue Chambly Noire

The Quebec brewery Unibroue made its name in the early '90s with Blanche de Chambly, inspired by the Belgian witbier ales. Four years ago it came up with this impressive cousin at the other end of the color spectrum. It pours dark brown with a moderately high tan head (like most Unibroue brews, it's bottled on the lees), showing a yeasty nose with a whiff of pears and black pepper. On the palate, it's full of roasted flavors like black coffee or toasted walnuts, a bit creamy with a slightly dry finish.

5. It's time fruit juice loses its wholesome image, some experts say

To many people, it's a health food. To others, it's simply soda in disguise.
To many people, it's a health food. To others, it's simply soda in disguise. That virtuous glass of juice is feeling the squeeze as doctors, scientists and public health authorities step up their efforts to reduce the nation's girth. --------------------...

7. Review: Caffe Roma in Beverly Hills

The name Caffe Roma probably doesn't ring a bell with most Angelenos. Though the Beverly Hills cafe doesn't have the name recognition of Valentino, Osteria Angelini or Drago, say, it has been, for many years, the hangout for a certain louche 90210 set that treated it as a kind of insider's clubhouse.

11. Plan for Victorville-to-Vegas train gains steam

Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
The idea has been kicked around for years — a high-speed train to zip passengers from SoCal to Sin City and then boomerang them back, bypassing the sea of brake lights flooding the highway to and from Las Vegas. Originally, even the most farfetched...

Rich and luscious Total time: 45 minutes Servings: 8 (makes 16 pancakes) Note: Adapted from BLD in Los Angeles. The restaurant recommends using a dryer ricotta with large curds such as Gioia (a wet ricotta will make the batter grainy). 3 eggs, yolks...

Dear SOS: There is a wonderful little bakery in St. Helena, Calif., called the Model Bakery. They make a fabulous molasses ginger cookie. Although all their baked goods are terrific, it is that cookie recipe I covet. Here's hoping you can get it for publication.

19. Recipe: Oatmeal raisin cookies from Auntie Em's Kitchen

Dear SOS: I was at Auntie Em's Kitchen in Eagle Rock today for the first time. While they are known for their amazing cupcakes and fantastic food, today I had the best oatmeal cookie I've ever eaten. It was thin, chewy and crispy at the same time, with subtle hints of spices. Absolutely delicious! I'm sorry I didn't bring home a few more. Do you think they might share the recipe with us?

Sun Staff
