  1. A camp for every child

When it comes to booking a specialized camp for your special child, the earlier the better. Some schedules are already filled, such as the unique camp for those with MSUD, a rare metabolic problem known as maple syrup urinary disease, at Vee Bar Ranch (veebar.com) in Laramie, Wyo. Although, the ranch can offer a strict, protein-free diet (PKU) at any time. Many other specific camps are offered only for a few weeks each summer.

  3. Phylicia Barnes: An arrest, and questions

The arrest late Wednesday of a suspect in the killing of North Carolina teen Phylicia Barnes is a vindication of the tremendous effort and resources the Baltimore Police Department poured into the case after the 16-year-old disappeared from her older sister's Northwest Baltimore apartment in late 2010. But coming as it does amid a probe into the activities of the lead investigator in the case after his own daughter disappeared this month, the arrest also highlights lingering questions about discipline within the department and raises concern about whether officers' misconduct could jeopardize this or other cases.

  5. Dining review: Fatty's keeps it really vegan

Situated in what looks to be a deco-style former garage, with concrete pillars framing floor-to-ceiling glass and lights dangling from its exposed-beam ceiling, Fatty's & Co. beacons passersby on Colorado Boulevard.

  7. Dining Review: The appetizers aren't bad, for starters

The Hollywood Pasta Company in Burbank, opened last year by chef and caterer Kurt Ehrlich, doesn’t look exactly glam from the outside — its small storefront façade sandwiched on Burbank Boulevard between an alley-like parking lot and a liquor store. Inside, burgundy walls and elegant but crowded seating bring the tone up several notches.

  13. Dining Review: Oinkster goes well beyond pork

Is it sacrilege to love the chicken salad at a joint famous for its house-cured pastrami?

  17. Nothing fancy, but good fusion

When a menu ranges from Mediterranean to Mexican to seafood to burgers, you can usually expect at best mediocre food. It’s like going to a movie starring Jim Belushi, Eric Roberts and Carmen Electra. Gerlach’s Grille in Pasadena is the exception.

  19. Scuba diving may hold promise for paraplegics

Outfitted in scuba gear and 100 feet underwater, Cody Unser noticed a weird tingling in her legs. She dived a second and a third time, and again felt tingling. It was subtle, but it was the first new sensation that she had felt in three years, since becoming paralyzed from the chest down at age 12.

  23. The sound of a delicious bargain

It’s comforting as you’re waiting for the pupusas you just ordered at a neighborhood Salvadoran joint to hear the slap, slap, slap of hands smacking masa into fat, tortilla-shaped discs. Your mouth starts watering, knowing the corn dough is being patted around the savory filling, and about to be tossed onto a sizzling griddle.
