1. Thoughts from Dr. Joe: To the Spartan football team

Throughout life my allegiances have varied. I’ve gone from the Yankees, to the Mets, to the Dayton Flyers, and back to the Yankees. Since my daughter, Sabine, began high school, I’ve become a Spartan, a true blue fan of La Cañada. Last...

  5. Farm Management Minute: Long term effects of short term decisions

Many livestock producers are faced with some short-term decisions that could impact their operations for years to come. Reducing breeding stock numbers, buying seemingly expensive feed, holding onto their herds by feeding unfamiliar feedstuffs are a few...

  9. The Orioles -- and Baltimore -- reawaken

It thoroughly confounds the pundits that the Baltimore Orioles, separated by 15 years from their last winning season, and with a roster dominated by the young and unknown, would host the New York Yankees in a September series with first place on the line. But anyone who knows history and baseball understands that, in certain times — when the stars align in favor of those determined to extract every shred of excellence from themselves; when the parts of a group undergo the chemical bonding that produces the sum of a team; and when accountability breeds the confidence to do great things — the improbable can become the possible. In fact, it happened very much like that 52 years ago.

  11. On the Spot: On this United flight, seats come at a premium

Question: I have a complaint about being forced to pay $60 extra for an Economy Plus seat for a United flight from New York to L.A. The only seats offered were Economy Plus. It's not that the economy seat options were exhausted — there were none to start with. I thought this was a technical glitch, so I confirmed my purchase and called United to get my seat assignment. The ticketing agent had no clue why those seats were Economy Plus only. It's like paying the fare to get on a public bus, and then once you get on the bus, being told that you have to pay an additional $60 just for a seat.

  15. Drought and passage of the 2012 Farm Bill

As we consider the shape of the 2012 Farm Bill and the likelihood of getting it through the House of Representatives, we are reminded of one of the sayings of Yogi Berra: “It ain't over 'till it's over.” As we write this column, there are only 8...

  17. Author Harvey Araton Speaks About Yankee Great Yogi Berra at The Westport Library

Yogi Berra is probably the most quotable Yankee there ever was. When he was fired by George Steinbrenner in the mid-'80s, he vowed not to return to the team, and kept his promise for 14 years. The rift was mended in 1999, and Berra began a friendship with former Yankee pitching great Ron Guidry. Guidry would pick up Berra at the airport each year for spring training, and the two would watch the young players and shoot the shit. New York Times sports columnist Harvey Araton wrote a book about this playful relationship, Driving Mr. Yogi: Yogi Berra, Ron Guidry and Baseball's Greatest Gift. he'll be at the Westport Library this Tuesday, August 14 to discuss and sign copies.
