1. Sculptor 'tries to catch the essence of Coach' John Wooden

John Wooden is back. Not soon enough, in this me-first, Black Mamba world riddled with ego and hubris. Wooden's glory grows with each passing year, and every time Jonathan Vilma appeals his NFL case, or Lance Armstrong insists it's all a set-up. With Vince Lombardi, Wooden is the symbol of "old school" values. His simple virtues, his stubbornness, his bone-deep integrity are needed now more than ever.

  3. Manny Machado's fifth-inning homer had plenty of historical significance

NEW YORK — Orioles third baseman Manny Machado has said repeatedly that he is just soaking up the playoff atmosphere, trying to have fun and not do too much. He's here to do what he can to contribute, not be a savior.

  5. Orioles finally get a crack at their long-time tormenters from New York

Against anyone else, it would have seemed preposterous when the 12-year-old boy's hand reached into the field of play to change the course of the Orioles' 1996 playoff run.

Against anyone else, it would have seemed preposterous when the 12-year-old boy's hand reached into the field of play to change the course of the Orioles' 1996 playoff run. Against the New York Yankees? Jeffrey Maier was just another chapter in a long...

  7. Miami Marlins' Logan Morrison a finalist for prestigious Hutch Award for community service

I'm not sure if Logan Morrison will stay healthy or productive enough to be part of the Miami Marlins' future, but it's clear he's already distinguished himself with good deeds off the field.

  11. Dylan Bundy could join short list of teenagers to play in the postseason

Now that 19-year-old righty Dylan Bundyis with the Orioles, the question is whether he'll be put on the playoff roster (yes, he is eligible) if the club indeed has one.

Now that 19-year-old righty Dylan Bundyis with the Orioles, the question is whether he'll be put on the playoff roster (yes, he is eligible) if the club indeed has one. Right now, my guess is no. Simply because the bullpen has a lot of arms, and ones...

  13. Guillen could be Marlins' fall guy

Ozzie Guillen is getting what he asked for when he left one of the most loyal owners in sports to work for one of the quirkiest. His job is in jeopardy only one season into a four-year deal, and few will be sad if he is swept out alongside longtime player personnel guy Larry Beinfest as the Marlins limp away from a horrific first season in their new art deco home.

  15. Art Callaham: If stadium is to be built, time to begin is now

This week, I’ve chosen to write about an issue that is on the minds of many readers: the proposed downtown stadium. My opinion is that if we don’t get it approved and started before the city election (Nov. 6), we might not be able to get it...

  21. Angels cover boy Mike Trout is still amazing

No fish jokes about this kid. Mike Trout is a keeper. Who could have imagined where this was headed when he was called up on that fateful day of April 28. He looked a little bit like Mickey Mantle and he sure could run like the Mick. But the talent-rich,...

  23. The Orioles -- and Baltimore -- reawaken

It thoroughly confounds the pundits that the Baltimore Orioles, separated by 15 years from their last winning season, and with a roster dominated by the young and unknown, would host the New York Yankees in a September series with first place on the line. But anyone who knows history and baseball understands that, in certain times — when the stars align in favor of those determined to extract every shred of excellence from themselves; when the parts of a group undergo the chemical bonding that produces the sum of a team; and when accountability breeds the confidence to do great things — the improbable can become the possible. In fact, it happened very much like that 52 years ago.
