9. Anthony Allen, Damien Berry not relinquishing backup RB competition

Perhaps the surest sign of the Ravens’ trust in Anthony Allen was the coaches’ decision to insert the running back to succeed Ray Rice in the second quarter of Thursday night’s 31-17 victory over the Atlanta Falcons.

  15. Ravens news, notes and opinions

The Ravens had 13 players not participating in any part of practice Saturday and another two (tight end Ed Dickson and linebacker Darry Blackstock) who didn’t finish the workout because of injuries. The potentially season-ending Achilles tear to linebacker Terrell Suggs was the biggest blow obviously, but the loss of practice time for first or second-year players like Bernard Pierce (hamstring), Tandon Doss (hamstring), Jah Reid (calf), Courtney Upshaw (shoulder) and Jimmy Smith (back) shouldn’t be overlooked. Upshaw is the only one on the list that was a near certain starter, though Smith is competing with Cary Williams for a starting role. But the rest of the above-mentioned group figure to, at the very least, be key reserves. Ravens coach John Harbaugh does a great job not publicly fixating or fretting about injuries, but I’d have to imagine the coaching staff is getting anxious with how much practice time these guys are missing. The good news is Upshaw says he is real close to a return and Doss said that he expects to practice today.

  17. Taking stock of Ravens' depth chart

Nothing of true consequence has transpired yet at Ravens training camp, not even an actual preseason game -- the best litmus tests for who's worthy of inclusion on the roster.

  21. Bernard Pierce understands competition that awaits him

As a third-round pick in April, Bernard Pierce may be the highest running back selected by the team since 2008 when Ray Rice was taken in the second round, but the rookie fully comprehends that doesn’t guarantee a spot on the Ravens' active 53-man roster.

  23. Who is left out on the NFL's free agent market?

Two weeks out from their first practice of training camp, the Ravens have just $606,858 available under the salary cap if they hope to, as they seem to do every year, acquire a key veteran before the start of this season. Of course, they could potentially free up more wiggle room by negotiating a long-term extension with running back Ray Rice or by releasing a pricey veteran this summer (<a href="http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d82a72793/article/bryant-mckinnie-is-a-potential-ravens-camp-casualty" target="_blank">maybe Bryant McKinnie, as NFL.com speculates?).
