  1. Get lawn mower ready to work

    Special to the Tribune
When the temperature finally rises along with the grass, optimists drag the lawn mower out of cold storage, pull the cord, and expect it to start. You might get lucky, or maybe not with the dregs of watered-down gas in the tank. But you don't have to haul...

  3. Fighting fire with good sense

A third of all house fires start where one has already been started on purpose — at the kitchen stove. According to the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) there are more than 150,000, causing hundreds of fatalities, thousands of injuries, and almost a billion dollars in property loss a year. Some fire officials say the number of kitchen fires is actually about 10 times higher, and that many go unreported.

  15. A triumvirate of food, life, memory

The first time I ate at Prune on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, my brunch arrived in a series of crinkled, metallic old-fashioned squeeze tubes, as though I had fallen asleep in a charming restaurant and awakened in an apothecary. My first visit, in 2000, shortly after Gabrielle Hamilton opened her restaurant, predated the popularity of foams and vegetable leathers, farm-to-table dinners and the itemization of every last ingredient on every last menu. The plate also contained breads, jams, various condiments, liverwurst; the tubes held an assortment of spreadable pastes.
