  1. Status quo preserved

WASHINGTON -- America's 57th presidential election revealed that a second important national institution is on an unsustainable trajectory. The first, the entitlement state, is endangered by improvident promises to an aging population. It is now joined by the political party whose crucial current function is to stress the need to reform this state. And now the Republican Party, like today's transfer-payment state, is endangered by tardiness in recognizing that demography is destiny.

  3. Maryland surprises in gay marriage and Dream Act support

Maryland's vote for same-sex marriage and the Dream Act runs counter to history, political science and human nature — a majority of citizens upholding laws that benefit distinct minorities. I think a little more attention must be paid to this. I find it extraordinary.

  5. Campaign's over, time to vote

Having just observed dozens of my fellow citizens standing in line for more than an hour to vote, I started to feel good about the country again. Some 430,000 Marylanders took advantage of five days of early voting this year, so many that Sandy Rosenberg, the veteran state delegate from Baltimore, says he'll be filing a bill in the next legislative session to expand the opportunities for early voting.

  7. Rodricks: Thousands of undocumented workers pay state taxes

Under the Maryland Dream Act, students who want to attend our community colleges or public universities at the in-state tuition rate must have attended a Maryland high school for at least three years. They must prove that their families filed state income...

  9. Rodricks: For backers of education and veterans, Dream Act is a two-fer

The Baltimore Sun It hasn't received much attention, but there's a provision in the Maryland Dream Act, up for your approval or rejection on the November ballot, that extends a benefit to veterans. Voters ought to take note of it, because if we vote down...

  13. U Of H Graduate Seeks House Seat In Utah

A specter is haunting the Congressional Black Caucus, the specter of integration. It is discomforting enough that the now 43-member CBC has included a Republican since 2011, when Florida's Allen West became the first Republican to join the CBC since 1997....

  15. Of football refs, retail politics and an unusually quiet state delegate

Nobody asked me but . . . I was worried about Pat McDonough, the Republican state delegate who represents parts of Harford and Baltimore counties. We hadn't heard from him all week. This was really odd. Usually, when there is mob violence in our...

  21. Arizona and the new immigration reality

<span style=&quot;font-size: small;">Supporters of Arizona's "show your papers" immigration law take comfort that the Supreme Court upheld the part allowing police to check the immigration status of people they lawfully stop. The Federation for American Immigration Reform called the decision "an important victory" for those "who want their jobs, tax dollars and security protected from mass illegal immigration." But since the police can't charge or hold illegal immigrants indefinitely, it may not have much effect.</span>

  23. Patt Morrison Asks: Pocho pundit Lalo Alcaraz

Every presidential campaign turns out to be a quadrennial godsend for editorial cartoonists, but for Lalo Alcaraz, 2012 is a jubilee year. Herman Cain, chowing down at a Miami restaurant, asks, “How do you say ‘delicious' in Cuban?” Newt...
