  1. 10/25/2011-Grumpy Republicans

I don't know if the Republicans understand how incredibly stupid they look. That's good for the Democrats and editorial cartoonists, but it's not good for democracy. Who could possibly vote for any one of those losers, except hardcore prejudiced, thoughtless GOP insiders who would vote for Beelzebub himself if he were a Republican.

  11. Fisherman or not, you can taste a bit of old Florida in Oak Hill

"You're not a fisherman, are you?"
"You're not a fisherman, are you?" The guy who asked me that was laughing because I had walked past his fishing rod, perched against the wooden railing on the public fishing pier in Oak Hill, without noticing that it was bending slightly under the strain...

  13. A golf sanctuary

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — If you come to the Mirimichi Golf Course looking for signs of Justin Timberlake, the hometown actor-singer who bought and renovated the course, you almost certainly will be disappointed.

  15. Heavenly solitude off Door County

ROCK ISLAND, Wis. — It's almost 8:37 p.m., and I rush with my flashlight on a path through the dark forest to get back to the boathouse. If I am late even 30 seconds, I will miss this appointment. It is an ironic bit of time management in a plot of wilderness where human time is a mockable convention. The dolomite beneath me formed during the Silurian Period, more than 400 million years ago, and wave-polished stones, released by winters, water and ice ages, clatter like bones along the shore. Residents have come and gone in a historical blink of an eye.

  17. Desert getaways during the cool season

When the calendar says October, it’s time in California to start thinking about a desert getaway because it won’t be long before temperatures come down enough to make a trip to the desert quite appealing. The sun’s still there in the late fall and winter, but those oppressive summer daytime temperatures moderate quite a bit.

  19. Natural Perspectives: Much ado about pumpkins

Pumpkin season is here. Despite threats of a pumpkin shortage due to flooding in the Midwest, the local grocery stores stock a bounty of pumpkins. Many people use them for entryway decorations for Halloween, either whole or with faces carved into them....

  23. A new age for New Age music

In late 2009, noise-pop group Animal Collective followed up its critics-poll-topping album "Merriweather Post Pavilion" with a stopgap EP, "Fall Be Kind." It generated buzz for featuring the first-ever licensed Grateful Dead sample, but what was more peculiar was a curlicue of pan flute woven into the song "Glaze" and credited to Gheorghe Zamfir. Zamfir, as the Romanian pan flute musician is best known, was a ubiquitous presence on television in the '80s, peddling wispy flute albums. For many people, it was one of the first sounds that came to be known by the label of New Age music.
