3. When 'forever' plans are trumped at the pump

Q: We planned to keep our 2002 BMW 745i "forever." Since my husband and I are both in our 70's we do very little driving and don't want to buy a new car. We were dismayed to learn that the ethanol content of gasoline will soon be increased to 15 percent....

  5. Believe it or not, their fuel economy improved 30 percent

Q: I drive a 2010 Mazda 3 that has 47,000 miles. When I fill up I always reset the trip odometer and have typically gotten 300 +/- miles per tank and usually refill when the light comes on. The last 30 days without any other observable difference I am getting much better mileage traveling 450 miles +/tank. I even had the dealer check the odometer for accuracy. I have been so nervous that I refill when at 1/2 tank fearing the gas gauge is faulty but consistently I only need 6 gallons or so to fill it up. Is there any explanation for this? I suppose I should just be happy about it but have a long trip planned for October and do not want to sit on the side of the road out of gas.

  7. Simple Green a solution or a problem?

Q: Quite simply, can I use Simple Green to clean the aluminum wheels on my '87 Mustang GT and my '03 Monte Carlo SS? If it gets on the brake rotors and brake pads will this be a problem?

  9. Ford ball joint deficiencies can leave you flat

Q: My wife and I owned a 2001 Mercury Marquis and a 2001 Lincoln Town Car. At 70,000 miles, the driver's side ball joint broke on the Mercury as my wife was parking the car. It had been making noise for some time, but the garage said it was OK. At a little over 40,000 miles, the same thing happened with the Town Car again, when she was parking the car. On both occasions the wheel collapsed and the left front end lay flat on the ground. Have you heard from anyone else regarding this problem? Has Ford acknowledged any ball joint deficiencies? These experiences have converted me into a Nissan fan.

  11. Tangled web for flooding victim

Q: I own a 2010 Toyota Venza. My entire car floods from what the Toyota dealer tells me is caused by a spider crawling up into my A/C drain and building a nest. The nest blocks the so water overflows into my car. The water is rug deep 0.5 to 1 inch and totally saturates everything. To cost of the repair and change of rugs etc. is $2,700 each time this occurs. This has happened to me twice now I feel that this problem can be corrected. If Toyota would put a piece of net or nylon over the opening or use a valve that lets water out but doesn't let anything else in. My dealer is of the same mind. He says he gets a few of these types of problems a month. I just got off the phone with Toyota Corporate office regarding this case (which I first logged a year ago). I have heard nothing from them since last year and their representative tells me I shouldn't expect to hear from them. They don't care if they lose a customer. They don't care if I sue them. They just don't care. I told the case manager that Toyota should reimburse me for these two incidents (total is now up to $5,600 on a car a purchased 1.5 years ago.) The answer is "Definitely not, Toyota doesn't do that."

  13. Can bad gas affect fuel economy?

Q: We have a 2008 Ford Edge AWD with 35,000 miles on the odometer. We mostly purchase BP gasoline from a station that received some of the bad gas due to the Whiting, Ind. refinery problem. We have not experienced any of the starting problems, however...

Q: I have a 2009 Honda CRV that has automatic climate control. In theory, I set the temperature and the system does the rest. However, I've noticed that even when it is cold outside and only the heater should be running, I find that telltale, dripping...
