1. Surprise: Two new tires should go on rear

Q: I made an appointment at a 'chain' tire store for two new front tires for my front-wheel-drive minivan. Not till I arrived was I told the new tires had to go on the rear if there was significant difference between the amount of tread on the new tires compared to the old. I said I was replacing the front tires only because I'd experienced poor traction in several inches of snow, so putting the new tires on the rear would provide no benefit. We inspected the tires and the salesman concluded there was a significant difference, and said company policy dictated the new tires had to go on the rear. (By my estimate, the existing tires had about 25 percent tread remaining, and would have passed state inspection.) A different tire store granted my request, but only after I signed a form indicating I was taking this action against their recommendation. Other sources support the rear-wheels claim, but I disagree.
