1. School daze: Ten warning signs you've spent too much time touring college campuses

Parents of rising high school seniors with college aspirations have likely spent a good chunk of time this year experiencing that peculiar educational tradition known as the "college visit." Even those who have already criss-crossed the country catering to the whims of a child enthralled with the prospect of attending school on the West Coast or maybe in the Northeast or perhaps Florida, or all three simultaneously, if that were only possible, may have miles to go yet before they sleep.

  3. Choosing the best tires for rain

Driving in rain, especially heavy rain, can be terrifying. Wind speeds increase, visibility decreases, and more accidents occur. The more rain that falls, the more dangerous it is to be driving. Rain water builds up on the surface of the road and increases the likelihood of hydroplaning. If you remember back to driver’s education classes, your car can hydroplane at speeds as low as 30 MPH, putting you in a very dangerous situation on the road. You also may remember from driver’s education that the first twenty minutes of rain are the most dangerous because all the dried oil and petroleum products on the road become loose, making the roads extremely slick. Slowing down, practicing defensive driving, and equipping your car with the best rain tires can increase your safety when road conditions are wet. There are a lot of tires available on the market today, but <a href="http://www.firestonecompleteautocare.com/tires/best-in-class.jsp?s_kwcid=TRB_TIR_BC_2">choosing the best tires for rain can be confusing if you don’t know what to look for. The following attributes are essential to ensuring you’ve found the best rain tire.

  7. Tractor-trailer retread tires: Safe?

Q: I enjoyed your recent article on tire technology improvements and the demise of the full-sized spare. One area where technology appears to still need improvement is in recapping of tires. This observation is based on the amount of tire-tread debris on roadways, particularly on interstate highways. It is not uncommon to have to swerve around sections of tire tread on the roadway. I have had at least one instance where we were nearly struck by tread from the truck ahead of us while traveling at highway speeds. It would be interesting to learn how often accidents have been attributed to retreaded tire sections coming off of trucks and what process improvements have been made in recent years. As I understand it, retreaded tires are seldom used any longer on passenger vehicles, but they are common on truck tires for cost reasons.
