  1. X-rays show galactic black hole spinning near speed of light

    Black holes may have given up some secrets of their growth thanks to the sleuthing of two X-ray space telescopes. The findings have solved a long-standing mystery about a supermassive black hole’s spin, finding that some of them can whirl very close to what the speed of light allows.
    This post has been corrected, as indicated below.

  5. Chicago X-files: Center studies UFOs

    Opening a file cabinet at the Center for UFO Studies reveals manila folders marked with spine-tingling titles such as &quot;Alien Luggage Report," "Project Moonwater" or "The CIA's role in UFO Studies." Yet, elsewhere there's a conspicuous lack of secret laboratories with test tubes that hold mysterious substances. Bearded men in white coats and tinfoil hats babbling about far-fetched conspiracy theories are nowhere to be found. And the center's director isn't even convinced that little grey men flying around in disc-like spaceships actually exist.

  15. Finding life on other planets? It's a matter of time

    The National Aeronautics and Space Administration reported this week that ancient rocks on Mars analyzed by its Curiosity rover, which landed on the Red Planet in August, show that what is today a barren and inhospitable environment might well have supported living organisms quite comfortably in the distant past. Several billion years ago, scientists say, Mars had a thicker atmosphere and warmer weather and was awash in water flowing across its surface that was safe enough to drink.

  19. Exoplanet atmosphere offers clues about far-off planet's formation

    Astronomers have had great success using tools like <a href=&quot;http://kepler.nasa.gov/" target="_blank">NASA&rsquo;s Kepler space telescope</a> to peer into the heavens and find planets outside our solar system, but they haven&rsquo;t yet been able to describe those worlds in great depth. In large part, that is because they usually detect so-called exoplanets through indirect means &mdash; by observing how they obscure a tiny bit of light as they pass between their star and our vantage point, or how their gravity makes their host star wobble.&nbsp;
