  7. Well deserved honor for Allen coach Doug Snyder

    Groller's Corner
I have a tribute column running in the paper tomorrow on the life of Ken Wildonger. He was one of the last of his kind, someone who meant so much to the city of Allentown, the school district and the kids in the community. Wildonger loved Doug Snyder...

  11. Foreigner to get new singers -- 24 of them -- for Allentown Fair show

    Lehigh Valley Music
Some people liked Foreigner during its heyday, when Low Gramm was its singer. Some like it better now, with Kelly Hanson, who’s been lead singer since 2005. But when the classic rock band takes the stage Aug. 31 in front......

  17. Mercer graduation draws big crowd

HARRODSBURG — Mercer Senior High’s gymnasium may have a maximum capacity of around 2,500, but on Friday night valedictorian Caleb Patrick Sheehan made sure to make it a point in his address to “welcome the 3,000 people in attendance.” Sheehan’s approximation seemed accurate since a live video feed of the graduation played out in the large room adjacent to the gym for those who couldn’t find seats in the main room. Still many others stood on the second floor walk ways that surround the gym floor. This was the school’s fifth annual commencement since the merging of Harrodsburg High and Mercer County into one school system. Senior Class President Jacob Austin Abner welcomed all in attendance while introductions were made by Taylor Morgan Griggs and an invocation was delivered by Anne Elizabeth Wilson. State Representative Kim King gave a special presentation.Laura Leigh Pidcock received a special award for 13 years of perfect attendance. Other honors went to the 13 members of the class of 2011 who achieved Commonwealth Diplomas: Rebecca Lynn Carss, Joseph Edward Blau Jr., Breanne Skye Gibson, Taylor Morgan Griggs, Timothy Andrew McGill Jr., David Anthony Price, Caleb Patrick Sheehan, Tori Shay Tuggle and Mei Mei Zheng. There were two keynote student speakers, salutatorian Anthony Stephen Patterson Jr. and Sheehan.Patterson spoke first and thanked his teachers and all those associated with what he called “the wonderful educational system of Mercer County.” Patterson also touched on the innocence of childhood dreams when viewed from an adult’s perspective.“Imagine a world in which we all became what we wanted to be when we were 5 years old. There would be pirates, princesses, professional athletes of all sorts and astronauts all over the streets. Although that would be an amazing world, odds are, none of you fulfilled your childhood dream, with the exception of an old friend of mine who assures me that he is still on track to becoming a successful Ginger Bread man. Don’t ask. “Today we aspire to become engineers, lawyers, philosophers and pediatric heart surgeons. I guess sometime while growing up we realized that becoming a pirate wouldn’t pay the bills in today’s economy nor be culturally appropriate. Oh well,” Patterson sighed, getting a big laugh.Sheehan spoke to the issue of life after high school and how there’s nothing wrong with not having all the answers, or taking comfort in those who have always been there for you in years past. “I don’t know what it is like to be out there. I’m just as lost as you are. But that’s alright. I’m not worried about us, and you shouldn’t be either. You see, as you look around this room, you’ll be looking at about three thousand people who will be right behind you all the way, from here on out. Just as they were there for you when you were little, comforting you when you jammed your toe on the doorframe, they’ll be there for you when your whole life seems to be crumbling before your eyes. “Like I said, don’t worry. Life can’t be that much different from high school anyway. We’ll still be tested more than we’d like, there will still be bullies to deal with, and who you know will still matter. But you’ll also still have fun, have friends, and still learn something new every day. So if you’re worried about missing high school now that you’re out, don’t,” Sheehan said.Mercer County Senior High School’s Class of 2011:Jacob Austin Abner, Kathryn Michelle Aldridge, Morgan Brooke Allen, Taylor Elizabeth Allen, Sophia Dawn Ammons, Whitley Hunter Anderson, Jillian Shea Arnold, Alexander Isaiah Baker, Eric Thomas Baker, Matthew Tyler Baker, Tyler Duane Baker, Matthew Sean Banks, Lindsay Nicole Barnes, Savanna Beauchamp Barnett, Rachel Tyler Bartley, Lee Sullivan Baxter, Braxton Lawrence Bean, Kyle A.
