  1. President Obama: When making nice can be naughty

Does it matter that President Obama was right? That Kamala Harris is “the best-looking attorney general in the country”?
Does it matter that President Obama was right? That Kamala Harris is “the best-looking attorney general in the country”? Not really. As a quip, it failed; as an attempt at gallantry, it didn’t need saying. The president cushioned his...

  3. Obama calls Kamala Harris 'best-looking:' Accurate, but sexist?

Let’s just get it out on the table: California, quite simply, has freakishly good-looking elected officials. Between the stunning Atty. Gen. Kamala Harris and the gorgeous Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, this, as they say, is the objective truth. I&...

  5. Why is GOP self-destructive?

Why do Republicans keep attacking their members? They bicker and denounce each other. That's not how you win elections. Case in point is the ill-fated 2008 ticket of Sen. John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin. Ms. Palin and her family were ruthlessly attacked — by her own party — which contributed to Senator McCain losing his bid for the presidency. The latest example is Dr. Benjamin Carson who has expressed no desire to position himself for public office and is instead voicing strong, sensible solutions to some of the problems in this country.

  7. How come we don't hear about 'conservative media bias'?

    Liberal media bias.
Liberal media bias. So incessant is this complaint from conservatives that the three words string together as one, like Holy Roman Empire. But like the old saw about that infamous regime being neither holy nor Roman nor an empire, liberal media bias...

  9. Republicans rediscover tolerance

WASHINGTON -- As lawmakers put the finishing touches on an immigration deal, veteran Rep. Don Young decided this would be a good time to come out with an immigration plan of his own. His involves calling Latino immigrants "wetbacks."

  11. Oval Office may be Floridian's home

With each passing day, Jeb Bush looks more and more like a presidential candidate. At this stage, he's striking the obligatory, non-committal tone, but he's just come out with a book on immigration reform, is showing up on radio and TV talk shows, and...

  13. Oil revenue fuels intense fighting among Alaska lawmakers

JUNEAU, Alaska — Over most of the last several decades, Alaska's North Slope was America's energy powerhouse. The legendary oil fields of Prudhoe Bay and Kuparuk gushed 2 million barrels a day out of the frozen tundra and down the Trans-Alaska...

  15. Please, Los Angeles, don't buy what Alaska is giving away

With apologies to Stephen Foster: “Oh! Susitna, do not cry for me; you come from Alaska, on bended knee.” OK, so it’s not going to be No. 1 on the Billboard charts (bullet or no bullet). But then again, this Susitna is not a...

  21. The last Dow record: My, how things have changed

Remember the world on Oct. 9, 2007? That was when the Dow Jones industrial average last set a record high. It was a headier time back then: pre-financial crisis, pre-bailouts, pre-Great Recession. The stock market still felt like a party. The economy,...
