1. Democrats try to keep us in the dark

In response to letter writer David Drake ("Voters see through the GOP smoke screen," Jan. 9), he seems to fail to realize that there can be no public sector without the private sector jobs that generate the money for it to exist in the first place....

  3. Glenn Reibman should stay at bottom of Crystal Lake

I can't imagine there are many things more frustrating than being the heroine or hero of a horror movie. Whenever you think you've vanquished the mad stabber or machete wielder, the maniac pops back to his feet and comes at you again.

  9. Ford ball joint deficiencies can leave you flat

Q: My wife and I owned a 2001 Mercury Marquis and a 2001 Lincoln Town Car. At 70,000 miles, the driver's side ball joint broke on the Mercury as my wife was parking the car. It had been making noise for some time, but the garage said it was OK. At a little over 40,000 miles, the same thing happened with the Town Car again, when she was parking the car. On both occasions the wheel collapsed and the left front end lay flat on the ground. Have you heard from anyone else regarding this problem? Has Ford acknowledged any ball joint deficiencies? These experiences have converted me into a Nissan fan.

Something funny happened on the way to Election Day 2012. In the final hours before the tally, when further argument was just noise, when there was nothing left but the waiting and the wishing and the muttering over Chicago's polling place confusion,...
