  1. Goldberg: Obama's 'idiot' defense

Although there's still a great deal to be learned about the scandals and controversies swirling around the White House like so many ominous dorsal fins in the surf, the nature of President Obama's bind is becoming clear. The best defenses of his...

  3. Ben Jealous: Black farm ownership overcoming decades of discrimination

There is no way to make up for decades of discrimination that crippled the proud history of black farm ownership. But we can do our best to move forward.  In 1999 the U.S. Department of Agriculture agreed to settle the civil rights lawsuit Pigford v...

  5. Obama administration needs to change the conversation

By WILLIAM P. HOJNACKI I am very disappointed in the way that the Obama administration is dealing with the Republicans in the ongoing discussions concerning the federal budget. The administration has, once again, allowed the Republicans to set the agenda...

  7. Superman, a hero with staying power

My nomination for American hero of the 20th century is someone who lived half his life in disguise and the other half as the world's most recognizable man. He appeared on more radio broadcasts than Ellery Queen and in more movies than Marlon Brando, who once played his father. He helped give America the backbone to wage war against the Nazis, the Depression and the Red Menace. He remains an intimate to kids from Boston to Belgrade and has adult devotees who, like Talmudic scholars, parse his every utterance.

  13. Naperville honors barbershop singers

Barbershop singing has remained on a short list of activities that might be enjoyed equally by teenagers and octogenarians since a revival of the turn-of-the-century music took off in the 1930s.

  15. A health plan prescribed by 'Doc' Bowen

Instead of Obamacare, still so contentious and with all the pieces not yet in place, we could have had Bowencare, with the key piece put in place on July 1, 1988, by Ronald Reagan.
Instead of Obamacare, still so contentious and with all the pieces not yet in place, we could have had Bowencare, with the key piece put in place on July 1, 1988, by Ronald Reagan. It would be named for Dr. Otis R. Bowen, about whom there were many...

  23. Will Dodd-Frank save (or stifle) capitalism?

WASHINGTON -- It's been five years since the onset of the financial crisis -- the rescue of Bear Stearns in March 2008 -- and we still don't know whether the financial system is safe. In a recent speech, Daniel Tarullo, the Federal Reserve's point man on regulation, contended that substantial, though incomplete, progress has been made. As an example, he cited the doubling of equity capital for the 18 largest bank holding companies from $393 billion in late 2008 to $792 billion at the end of 2012. Equity capital is shareholders' money; it acts as a buffer against losses. Interestingly, JPMorgan Chase's well-publicized $6 billion loss by the trader nicknamed the "London Whale" confirms the point. Despite the loss's size, it never threatened a panic or overall financial stability.
