1. Sweet potatoes add savory side

The sweet potato casserole topped with marshmallows is a staple of the Thanksgiving dinner, but it is not everybody's favorite side dish. "I hated the sickly sweet, sweet potato casserole with marshmallows on top when I was growing up," confesses Dan Smith, chef/co-owner of Hearty.

  3. The last potpie

For everything that was about to happen, everything that was coming to light, I needed an old-fashioned potpie with a creamy chicken filling and a rich, flaky crust, the kind that puffed up and baked to a golden buttery crisp.

  5. A sea of choices

It's not always easy to get more fish into our diets. After all, most of us don't have fresh fish markets in the neighborhood. Mostly, I find myself at my local supermarket pondering dinner options at the seafood counter.

  9. Irrational exuberance at the farmers market?

True confession: I always overbuy at the farmers market. If I go with limited dollars, I find myself looking for the best bargains. A full wallet prompts stocking up — for what, I am not sure, because I will go back the following weekend and perhaps hit the downtown markets during my lunch hour. I am just happier with a full complement of vegetables in the fridge.
