In American film, it was a lull between the stylistic breakouts of the '60s and early '70s and the commercial mushrooming of indie films in the late '80s. It also marked the release of three comedies that would never have been made in Hollywood, except they were. "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai," steeped in hip deadpan irony, was released by Fox; "This Is Spinal Tap" was distributed by Embassy, divisions of which were soon to be batted around from owner to owner; and Alex Cox's "Repo Man" was courtesy of Universal.
