First impression: The first thing I realized about Empire Pizza Cafe is that the woman behind the cash register was friendly and courteous and found a way to share a laugh. She knew the menu as if she owned the place. As it turns out, Robin Levy-...

  7. What to sip with ...

One very simple, fail-safe wine and food pairing is a tannic red wine and seared steer. The normally astringent, even bitter tannins of many red wines are quickly mollified by both the blood protein and the fat of red meat (especially when it is not overcooked).

  9. Dining review: A buyer's market for pizza lovers

Now that Thanksgiving is over and Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa are upon us, evenings are likely to be filled with gift wrapping, project making, holiday concerts and school pageants. It's the most wonderful time of the year. It's also the busiest and the most bank-account-emptying.

  13. Dinner tonight! Caesar salad

Rich and creamy Caesar dressing, crunchy lettuce, fried capers, crisp croutons, shredded parmesan and a little lemon vinaigrette. That's how <a href=&quot;http://www.latimes.com/features/food/la-fo-sos-caesarsalad-20101021,0,4139250,full.story" target="_blank">Michael Mina does Caesar</a> at American Fish at Aria in Las Vegas. Sure, the recipe calls for more than a few ingredients, but it can be assembled from start to finish in about an hour. And I must warn you: Try this once and you may want to fix it again another night this week.

  19. Irrational exuberance at the farmers market?

True confession: I always overbuy at the farmers market. If I go with limited dollars, I find myself looking for the best bargains. A full wallet prompts stocking up &#8212; for what, I am not sure, because I will go back the following weekend and perhaps hit the downtown markets during my lunch hour. I am just happier with a full complement of vegetables in the fridge.
