Forget the tie and the socks this Father's Day. Give the Big D what he really hungers for. Go primal with our three B's: beef, bacon and bourbon.

  3. Dining Out: Two pieces of bread put together with flair

Pity the late John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich, whose snack during a card game gave name to the English culinary craze that followed. No, he didn't invent putting a filling between two pieces of bread. That had been done since ancient times. But you have to wonder whether any time someone slathers two slices of Wonder Bread with mayo and places in them a slice of American “cheese” and baloney and calls it by that name, if Lord Sandwich turns ever so slightly in his grave.

  13. Did Obama avert a bloodbath in Libya?

Remember when a crusading president, acting on dubious intelligence, insufficient information and exaggerated fears, took the nation into a Middle Eastern war of choice? That was George W. Bush in 2003, invading Iraq. But it's also Barack Obama in 2011, attacking Libya.

  17. Iliana in Wonderland

At one point of a dinner at Elizabeth restaurant, I was served a dark and rich maitake-mushroom tea (really a clarified broth) while a pure-white device on the table played Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit." Which made me think that chef/owner Iliana Regan is a smidge older, or a ton hipper, than I'd supposed. Probably both.

  21. Test Kitchen bonus: Recipes showcasing Florida crimini mushrooms

Crimini mushrooms, which are also called Roman, brown or Italian mushrooms, used to be the only mushroom grown in the United States. Growers abandoned them in favor of a faster-growing cousin, the common white button mushroom. However, an increase in consumer interest in mushrooms has given the cream-colored crimini another chance. The caps are cocoa-colored and have chocolate-brown gills. The texture is firmer and the flavor is much more intense and satisfying. Select plump, solid mushrooms with no sign of dampness or shriveling. Check the stems for any signs of mold. Store, refrigerated, in a basket covered with a towel for up to a week. Use raw or in any recipe calling for domestic or button mushrooms.
