7. Pratt Street Ale House is a step up from battered ambience of old Wharf Rat

A few months after purchasing the Wharf Rat Brew Pub, along with its cellar brewery, its new owners closed it down for renovations and reopened it this year as the Pratt Street Ale House. This is the downtown location, right across the street from the Baltimore Convention Center, and within cheering distance of Oriole Park at Camden Yards. The original Wharf Rat on Ann Street in Fells Point is still owned and operated by the Oliver family.

9. Oz at the head of the table

Times Staff Writer
Put me at a table at one of the most spectacular beaches in the world where I can look down and practically see the stitching on the surfers' wetsuits as they angle to catch a wave. The light has the clarity of late fall. Not a shred of cloud in the sky....

13. Art alongside food at Glass Grill in Baltimore

The brain works slowly in winter. There are dozens of beautiful art-glass pieces displayed behind the bar at the Glass Grill east of Highlandtown. There are two dazzling, enormous Dale Chihuly-inspired glass sculptures hanging from the Glass Grill's ceiling. If you ask your server about these sculptures, he'll tell you that the pieces were forged by Tim McFadden, and that you're welcome to stroll over with your beer to the adjacent glassworks, a converted garage, and watch him at work.

15. Danny's is a deli with a difference

LOX, matzo ball soup and corned beef sandwiches are on the menu, but Danny's Venice Deli isn't a traditional Jewish delicatessen — and getting comfortable with that idea is key to enjoying the many pleasures it offers. Over time, it's likely to become a daily haven for a community of regulars and — who knows? — someday it might be the very model of the genre. For now, Danny's is a unique and appealing hybrid.

23. Ford's Filling Station

As our little group rounds the corner, we can see the waiters at the Italian restaurant look up with hope written all over their faces. But like the couple hurrying by just ahead of us, we walk right on past. Some advice: Don't make eye contact, it's just too painful. The Italian place is almost empty, yet a few doors down, the new Ford's Filling Station is a riotous clamor.
