3. A Cabbage Recipe Contest at the Westport Farmers' Market This Saturday

The folks at the Westport Farmers' Market like to pretend that winter doesn't exist, and that farmers' markets are things that should be held all year round. To celebrate the fact that they're still open in January, they'll be holding a cabbage recipe contest on Saturday morning. Prepare your favorite cabbage dish and have it in by 10:30 a.m. and chef Nancy Roper from Boxcar Cantina and Bill Taibe from LeFarm and whelk will pick their favorites, declaring a winner at noon. The cabbage used must come from a local farm, and the name of the farm must be noted on the entry. The winner will receive a Westport Farmers' Market shopping tote filled with goodies.

  13. Farmers Markets: The best of early winter

Although summer claims many of the sexiest, most attention-grabbing vegetables, such as eggplants, tomatoes, peppers and zucchini, in Southern California the vegetables that thrive in winter are equally abundant and alluring. Roots, crucifers and peas may be available year-round, but winter is their time to shine. In the spirit of the many award ceremonies held in this season, here are some of my favorite early winter vegetables and producers who do an extraordinary job with them, based on notes, photos and tastings over the last 14 years.
