  1. The definitive guide to the wines of Bordeaux, first published in 1850, gets an update

One of the first books I bought when I was doing my (brief) sommelier training in Paris years ago was a copy of “Le Féret,” the definitive guide to the wines of Bordeaux, oh, since 1850. I haven’t opened it in years, but when I wanted to...

  7. New Canaan's Charter Oak Brewery Aims to Connect With CT Brew Lovers

Scott Vallely brewed beer at home for 30 years while running a successful career in the paper and pulp industry. But the digital age took its toll, and three years ago, Vallely sold his company, paper.com. He always brewed beer in the kitchen of his New Canaan home, and his wife had always been understanding — even when it made the kitchen smell like the day after a frat party. But now, unemployed, his presence in the kitchen wasn't as welcome. "My wife said, 'You're not hanging around this kitchen. Why don't you start a brewing company? You know about it and you love it, and you love starting companies."

  11. Pucker up

Sour beers are a prime example of the "sounds weird, tastes awesome" phenomenon. It's no brewing mistake—these beers are intended to taste tart or acidic, a flavor they owe to the wild yeast or bacteria used in the brewing process. The science is complicated, but the results are some of the most interesting and refreshing beers on the market. And they're not just for beer geeks anymore; they're on tap and on shelves around the city, if you know where to look. With more Chicago-area breweries jumping on the sour bandwagon, now's the right time to try this sought-after style. Here are some expert tips for sour skeptics.

  17. Wine with wheels

During the summer, I like to be ready for all sorts of spontaneous weekend hangouts. I wear biking-appropriate footwear, always pack an umbrella, and&mdash;humble brag&mdash;I'm sort of a master of transporting booze to <a href=&quot;http://chicago.metromix.com/stories/1955-downtown-sound-2013-lineup" target="_blank"><span class="runtimeTopic">Millennium Park</span>'s Downtown Sound</a> concerts. Normally, beer growlers or six-packs are my go-to, but recently, portable wine packages have caught my eye. They're glass-free, so there's no need to worry about them breaking in my purse or backpack, and since they don't require a corkscrew, they're easy to bring to parties and picnics. I tested out four diverse options for vino on the go, any of which are way more acceptable than a Nalgene full of vodka. <em>kbernot@tribune.com @redeyeeatdrink</em>
